BLASPHE-ME EVENT, DE-BAPTISMS SLATED FOR ATHEIST CONVENTION AACON XXXV * April 9-12, 2009 * Atlanta, GA.

BLASPHEMY, HOLY WAFERS & DIP, OH MY!

THE UPCOMING 35th National Convention of American Atheists will feature special activities, including a "Blaspheme-Me" event and a De-Baptisms.

The Blasphe-Me is part of a series of protests to a recent non-binding United Nations Resolution that seeks to punish any open criticism of religion, specifically Islam. The measure, to be debated at an international conference later this month, threatens freedom of expression and would effectively insulate despotic, theocratic faith-based regimes from social criticism and political protest. Dave Silverman, Communications Director for American Atheists will host this event. Dave is covering this story on his blog, so visit http://atheists.org/blog/index.php/2009/03/01/blasphe-me-event-planned-for-convention.

WHAT: Blaspheme-Me event

WHERE: AACON XXXV, Atlanta, GA.

WHEN: April 9-12, 2009

The Convention will also include a De-Batpism Ceremony for those wishing to symbolically (and humorously!) shed any lingering residue of organized religion. This fun event, hosted by Frank Zindler and Edwin Kagin will include robes, gowns, a hair drier, sac red wafers and dip. Stay tuned!

It's all at the upcoming American Atheists National Convention, April 9-12, 2009 in Atlanta, Ga. We've also got a blockbuster line of speakers, workshops, social events and much more. Among those on the roster are:

* RICHARD DAWKINS
* ED BUCKNER

* JIM MORROW
* MICHELE GOLDBERG
* J. ANDREW THOMSON
* JOHN LOMBARD
* NATE PHELPS

Atheist lawsuit seeks to take 'so help me God' out of inaugural

I can't remember ever seeing atheism in the headlines as much as I have this holiday season.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/12/31/inauguration.lawsuit/index.html?iref=newssearch

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A number of atheists and non-religious organizations want Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony to leave out all references to God and religion.

In a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Washington, the plaintiffs demand that the words "so help me God" not be added to the end of the president's oath of office.

In addition, the lawsuit objects to plans for ministers to deliver an invocation and a benediction in which they may discuss God and religion.

An advance copy of the lawsuit was posted online by Michael Newdow, a California doctor and lawyer who has filed similar and unsuccessful suits over inauguration ceremonies in 2001 and 2005.

Joining Newdow in the suit are groups advocating religious freedom or atheism, including the American Humanist Association, the Freedom from Religion Foundation and atheist groups from Minnesota; Seattle, Washington; and Florida.

The new lawsuit says in part, "There can be no purpose for placing 'so help me God' in an oath or sponsoring prayers to God, other than promoting the particular point of view that God exists."

Newdow told CNN that he didn't name President-elect Barack Obama in the suit because in addition to participating as a government official at the ceremony, he possesses rights as an individual that allow him to express religious beliefs.

"If he chooses to ask for God's help, I'm not going to challenge him," Newdow said. "I think it's unwise."

Newdow said that as a member of a racial minority, Obama should have respect for atheists, who also are members of a minority.

Newdow said religious references in the inauguration ceremony send a message to non-believers.

"The message here is, we who believe in God are the righteous, the real Americans," he said.

Newdow said it's unconstitutional to imply that atheists and others are not as good.

He acknowledged that his suit is unlikely to be successful.

"I have no doubt I'll lose," he said, adding that he hoped to eventually succeed through appeals and hoped future inauguration ceremonies would exclude religious references.

Obama names science and technology team

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/12/20/obama-names-science-and-technology-team/

(CNN) — President-elect Barack Obama named his science and technology team Saturday with a pledge to ensure that “facts and evidence are never twisted or obscured by politics or ideology.”

“It’s time we once again put science at the top of our agenda and worked to restore America’s place as the world leader in science and technology,” he said in his Saturday radio address, in an apparent offhand swipe at President Bush.

“It’s about listening to what our scientists have to say, even when it’s inconvenient – especially when it’s inconvenient,” Obama said, adding that government support had been essential for the greatest scientific breakthroughs of recent history, like the development of the Internet. “Because the highest purpose of science is the search for knowledge, truth and a greater understanding of the world around us."

Religion: For Idiots, By Idiots

I got a frighteningly ignorant response to an anti-religion YouTube vid I did a while ago:

Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Whoever lusts is an adulterer at heart.
whoever hates is a murderer at heart.

Those are the basic things commands that real Christians believe.

There are no Christians in Jail.
No Christians will ever murder.

Murderers are equivalent of atheists , because they disobey God
.

Hitler wasn't a Christian.
He hated the people of God , the Jews.

I assure you he is in hell.

Do I even need to say anything? No, I don't.

I've come to the conclusion that if you want to turn the fence sitters away from religion/theology, you shouldn't waste your time debating/arguing...or even presenting the case for atheism/reason. I mean, why try to educate someone who is obviously too lazy to think? Just let religious people talk. "Wait a minute, that guy's a fucking moron and we believe in the same...oh, SHIT."

Mormon nutjob Leland Freeborn claims that there will be nuclear war by Xmas

He's known as the "Parowan Prophet"...and he'll be known as the shortest-lived prophet ever when nothing happens in two weeks and Obama is sworn in shortly thereafter. If you want to have a successful career as a religious doomsayer, you need to be as vague and long-term as possible.
